DREAM TEAM: NIKELAB RENEWS ITS PARTNERSHIP WITH RICCARDO TISCI
ANOTHER EASY WIN FOR THE MINOTAURS
It’s another slam dunk for NikeLab this spring, with the iconic brand renewing its partnership with Italian designer Riccardo Tisci. The result of this collab? A streetwear collection that shuns pretention and celebrates urban cool. The capsule includes sweaters, T-shirts, hoodies, dresses, trousers, shorts, caps and reimagined Air Force 1 high sneakers. The collection takes its inspiration from basketball (in particular the NBA), dropping repeated reference to the Victorious Minotaurs – a make-believe basketball team created in Tisci’s imagination during his poverty-stricken childhood in southern Italy. Overlaying the basketball motif is a good-versus-evil theme – the designer’s wink to Greek mythology. Tisci is often credited for bringing fashion to sportswear, but the new former creative director of Burberry is quick to rebut this compliment, saying sportswear had already made this transition when he entered the scene – he simply stripped the bling from sportswear, returning it to its democratic roots. Rarely do you find such a stylish blend of sport, street and elegance.
