RELIVING THOSE BURNING MEMORIES
Smell is our most primitive and mysterious sense – a single whiff and we’re reeled back in time, reliving the happiest, most precious moments of our lives. This quirk in our wiring lies at the centre of Anya Smells, a line of 12 luxurious candles created by accessories designer Anna Hindmarch.
Anya’s chosen scents are almost outrageously humdrum (baby powder, toothpaste, sun lotion, coffee, lip balm) but isn’t this precisely how scent-memory works – the more commonplace the fragrance, the stronger and fonder the recaptured moment?
Anya Smells candles have been crafted in partnership with perfumer Lyn Harris and are suffused with only the finest raw materials (here’s a taster: the toothpaste candle is a distillation of French peppermint, Australian grapefruit rind, menthol, candy floss accord and English rhubarb stalk). All candles are hand-poured in England and come in two sizes. Each candle jar is decorated with a playful graphic from the Anya Hindmarch Sticker Shop, to keep those smiles glowing long after the flame has subsided.
