STRIKE THE BALL HERE: A FOOTBALL MASTERCLASS FROM NIKE & VIRGIL ABLOH

HOT NOW: “FOOTBALL, MON AMOUR”

In celebration of the football World Cup – now just a few days away – Nike and Virgil Abloh have teamed up to create a lifestyle collection that’s guaranteed to score high in the sports- mad months ahead. The collection – dubbed Football, Mon Amour – has a strong streetwear edge while remaining faithful to the sport, with every piece invoking footie uniforms either past or present.

Much of the inspiration comes from Abloh’s own memories of playing the beautiful game as a youngster – for instance, all the numbers that appear on the apparel refer to
those worn by the American designer. The collection includes the Nike Flyknit Zoom Fly – a boldly orange, pared-down trainer most notable for the large white dot on its side. This dot represents the perfect spot to strike a ball, and it’s an aesthetic feature carried through to the rest of the collection, appearing also on collared football shirts and track pants. The ironic use of ‘logo’ celebrates the European habit of printing sponsor names across players’ chests. The lion juggling dots pays respect to team crests. And the checker board on the long-sleeve top is highly reminiscent of the Czech strips.
